Long Beach, Washington Outing

5-9 October 2011

October found us at Andersen's RV Resort in Long Beach, Washington. Approximately 3-1/2 miles north of Long Beach. The park is located on the ocean side of the highway and just a short walk to the beach. Several members did walk down to the ocean and enjoyed the view.

Wednesday the Grahams, Hoffmans, Bohnstedts and Gustafsons arrived early to enjoy an extra day of beach activity. Pawsons and Notdurfts pulled in on Thurs. Slacks on Friday.

Wednesday: Bohnstedts, Grahams, Hoffmans had lunch at the Pilot House restaurant in Ocean Park, a family style restaurant with large food portions, very tasty. For dnner, we drove 3 miles north of Ocean Park to enjoy a meal and ocean view at the Gustafson's beach cabin.

Thursday: Evening time found most of the men watching a Oregon football game in the Bohnstedt's coach, so several of the ladies drove to the Lost Roo 1700 Pacific Hwy S. Long Beach, WA. for dinner.

Friday: This weekend was the Cranberry Festival, so we toured the Cranberry Bogs at 2907 Pioneer Rd, Long Beach to watch the harvesting of cranberries, we all agreed that it was a labor intensive job done in the cold ponds. The ponds are flooded, the berries cut off the vines with a special mower, then men form a plastic or wooden boom and slowly walk in the cold water pulling the berries towards the machine that loads them into the trucks. It was a first for many of us and we found it very interesting. Next we drove into Ilwaco to the Columbia Heritage Museum, aka Ilwaco Museum to take in the exhibits and activities for the Cranberry Festival. Some of our group partook of the delicious cranberry/peach pie and said that was lunch. I, myself walked across the street to a small restaurant and ate a tasty cheeseburger while visiting with the owner. The museum is outstanding, with a wonderful collection of Native American artifacts, a built-in main street with a variety of buildings all having windows to peek thru to see what was there in the 1800's, grocer, doctor, barber etc., back up stairs is a permanent model train layout, the custom built canoe which was rowed to Ilwaco from Japan by a Frenchman, it took him 133 days. A video is available to watch his adventure.

Dinner was at the 42 nd St. Cafe, 4201 Pacific Hwy, Long Beach, actually closer to Seaview. There was a fixed price menu offering 3 courses for $20.00. very good.

Saturday: Between Long Beach and Ocean Park there is an antique store with 2 stories of goodies. Ron Notdurft visited with the owner who had been a neighbor when they were growing up, so Bev was able to browse with Diana, Jane and Pat. Lunch back at the Lost Roo with the men this time. Dinner was potluck and then our meeting.

Sunday: we checked out by 11 and headed home. It was a good time and weather not too bad.
